Bolton School Football Tournament

On Thursday, Holy Infant football team went to the annual Bolton School football competition. A series of superb goals and some fantastic play were on show as the lads made their presence felt, and were only held back by some “interesting” interpretations of the rules and even more “interesting” timekeeping by referees.

The boys had to wait nearly an hour for their first match while other teams in the group played twice or even three times, and were caught cold by Blackrod Church who raced into a 3-0 lead. However, some fantastic football and goals from James, Matthew and an own goal saw the comeback to 3-3 completed before the 8 minutes was up. Unfortunately, the referee played 14 minutes instead of 8, and Blackrod scored in the 13th minute! Holy Infant fought hard and pushed up to try to equalise and were unfortunately caught on the break, with the match unfairly ending 5-3.

The boys weren’t phased though, and set about putting things right, by smashing 6 goals (Bobby, Joe with 2 and a hat-trick from Matthew) past Kearsley West in a 6-0 win. A 1-0 victory via a goal from Matthew, despite a lacklustre performance against St Paul’s meant a win over Gaskell would send Holy Infant to the second round.

However, it wasn’t Holy Infant’s day, as the lads hit the bar 3 times and came close with over 20 shots in just 8 minutes, only for Gaskell to score with their only attempt of the game to knock the boys out.

It was ultimately a disappointing day, but with a lot of very good football played, there were lots of positives to take from the tournament, including the way the boys handled their disappointment and frustration with dignity and respect, representing the school with pride. Your school is very proud of you boys. Well done!

Year 3 & 4 Football Festival

On Tuesday this week, Holy Infant took a Year 3 team and a Year 4 team to the annual Bolton School Football Festival.

All the children represented the school with pride and performed fantastically to show what a bright sporting future the school has!

Year 3

Our Year 3 team consisted of Jorja, Josh, Philip, Charlie, Sam (who volunteered to help out from Year 4!) and Louis (another volunteer from Year 2!).

The children were brilliant and played a very entertaining brand of football, scoring an incredible 9 goals in just five matches!

Louis scored a cracker in a 1-1 draw with Prestolee, and then another in an unlucky 2-1 defeat to St Mary’s Deane. Josh came out of net to score his first in a close 2-1 defeat against Eagley, and then took goalscoring to an art from, smashing a superb hat-trick to bring about a comeback from 3-0 down against Walmsley for a 3-3 draw, before grabbing a second hat-trick in another 3-3 draw against Beaumont.

The Year Three team did the school very proud, and a massive thanks to Louis’ mum and the other parents who were a huge help to Mr Eccles as he managed two teams at once!

Year 4

Our Year 4 team were also a superb representation of our school, with a team consisting of Bobby, Owen, Ayden, Sophie, Brooklyn and Matthew.

Again, the children got well stuck in and played an entertaining and attacking style of football, with lots of goals!

Ayden strted the scoring off with a drilled shot in an unlucky 2-1 defeat against Eagley, before three consecutive wins saw Bobby score in  1-0 win over St Brendan’s, and then two goals from Ayden saw off St Mary’s Deane and Highfield in two further 1-0 victories.

Our next game unfortunately ended in a 2-1 defeat, but a cheeky nutmeg finish gave Sophie her first goal for the school.

It looked like the festival would end in defeat as with seconds left, we were 1-0 down against Sunning Hill. However, up stepped Bobby to score the sort of goal Lionel Messi can only dream of, jinking past all five of Sunning Hill’s outfielders before coolly slotting past the goalkeeper to equalise. Take a bow, son!

Another massive thanks to the Year 4 parents and particularly Mr Butler, who were again a huge help to Mr Eccles in running two teams at once.

All in all, a very successful day of football, and the footballing future looks very bright for Holy Infant and St Anthony!

Well done boys and girls!

Cross Country Fun Run

Yesterday was the annual Bolton School Cross-Country Fun Run!

Children from schools all around Bolton converged on Moss Bank Park for the event, which was for children from the whole of KS2.

Mr Eccles was extremely pleased to take an impressive 21 children to the event, despite the fact we were missing several due to dance practice. It just shows what a brilliant set of sportsmen and women we are producing here at Holy Infant!

Our major success story of the day was James, who finished an incredible 7th place, which is even more impressive as he’s still only in Year 5 – Mr Eccles feels a trophy coming next year!

All of the children were fantastic, and more importantly, they all enjoyed running and representing their school!

Well done boys and girls – we’re proud of you!

Year 2 Gymnastics

This week it was Year 2’s turn to meet the challenge of the Key Steps Gymnastics challenge, as we went back to St Joseph’s High in Horwich.

Unfortunately, our team was decimated due to circumstance, and only two of our team were able to attend the event, but Sophie and Emili did Holy Infant & St Anthony proud as they rolled, stretched and split with grace and elegance.

Below are some pictures of our fantastic gymnasts.

Year 3 Gymnastics

Last week, some of our Year 3 children went to St. Joseph’s High School to compete in a Gymnastics competition! For most of these children, it was their first time in a competition of this kind, and they represented our school fantastically, bending, rolling and balancing in shapes you wouldn’t believe were possible!

A big congratulations to Sadie, Macie, Sarah and Toni, who did a super job of showing the other schools what fantastic gymnasts we have at Holy Infant! Below are a few pictures of our girls completing the Body Management routine.

The Canon Weston Cup

On Monday 17th October, Holy Infant played in the Canon Weston Cup and this is how they got on:

In the 1st game we played, it was a 0-0 draw despite us being the better team.We had all the chances but were just poor in the final 3rd. We just couldn’t score. The final score was 0-0.

In the next game, we lost 1-0, but yet again we were better but still just poor in their half. Their goal was an easy tap-in. We were denied 2 clear penalties and their goal was scored with one of of players down injured. Final score 0-1

In the penultimate game we won☺4-1. After a bit of a bad start, Bobby scored and it really pushed us on. The second and third goals were scored by Joseph in great fashion. Then they scored a consolation before James scored a great volley to make it 4-1.

In the last game, we knew we needed to win to qualify for the semi final, but despite a fantastic performance against strong opposition, where our ‘keeper didn’t even touch the ball, we were unable to score and drew 0-0, meaning we were out.
